Well, summer is almost over. Just one more full week of freedom, though it will most likely be spent at school getting my room ready. Then the week after that we have two days of professional development, and then the kids come back the next Tuesday. I can never get to sleep the night before, though I tell myself it’s because I’m not used to going to sleep so early and not because I’m anxious.
It’s been a productive, busy summer and has gone by very quickly. Contrary to popular belief, not all teachers sit around the pool every day all summer. I wrote curriculum for two weeks, attended the Governor’s Institute for another week, planned with my grade partner, and read 20 books. (I love reading.) I didn’t take a class this summer for two reasons: I should start working on my principal cert but didn’t want to afford the classes, and I already have a project to work on this year from the Governor’s Institute. See, whenever I take a class, I want to incorporate what I’ve learned, but I already have a commitment to my Vocabulary Project. So this was a relaxing summer, but I think I’m ready to go back for another year in 5th grade.
Don’t hate teachers because we get our “summers off”. Anyway, it’s 2.5 months, not 3. Besides, as you will see in this blog, teachers work their 40 hours-a-week for the whole year (50 weeks) during the school year (40 weeks). See, we just work smarter, not harder!
