I blame parents.
Kids who don’t behave don’t understand consequences. Over the last ten years, I have come up with three scenarios for why kids don’t behave:
Home Life Scenario #1. There are no rules at home.
Home Life Scenario #2. There are rules at home, but parents don’t follow through with consequences for breaking the rules.
Home Life [...]

Phillies Phever struck again this week. Everyone jetted out of school to watch the World Series, even though the games didn’t start til 8:30. It may have contributed to no school work getting done this weekend. Again.
Monday 10/20: 9H 15: Tuesday 10/21: 7H 40 (BAD BAD DAY); Wednesday 10/22: 9H 40; Thursday 10/23: 9H [...]

We started over today.
I implemented the behavior program I used when I taught second grade with names on popsicle sticks and warning cups. It worked. I didn’t yell, just handed out warnings. (Only 2 to the same kid before lunch, and the rest came at the end of the day. Like 4 total. Great!) So [...]

Subtitled “The Worst Day EVER”
Warning: bad language
My class has become just totally, completely disrespectful, obnoxious and immature. They are out of control. And I don’t care, except that it pisses me off to no end. I want to just scream bloody fucking murder at them. I want to freak out so bad they never forget [...]

We had a workshop day on Monday. It was actually interesting though we don’t know when we’ll have time to implement yet another program. (A popular sentiment echoed by all the schools at today’s union meeting.) Our district keeps throwing money away on new initiatives – money we don’t have, mind you. Teachers are stressed [...]

Cupcakes. Homemade. Yellow cake with chocolate frosting and jimmies. Put them in a brownie pan and cover them with aluminum foil. Proudly carry them on the bus and into school, everyone asking, “Is it your birthday?” Why, Yes, it is. And what fun it was to bring cupcakes to school to celebrate. As we got [...]

Today the gym teacher told my kids they should thank me for coming back to work every day!
I can’t believe they were bad in gym. Everybody loves the gym teacher. They love gym! He said they wouldn’t stop chattering the whole time, and couldn’t follow directions for how to play a simple game like soccer. [...]

Yay, Phillies!
My students will be so stoked tomorrow! This playoff season has been extra fun for them because we just went to Citizens Bank Park last month; we walked on the warning track behind home plate, sat in the dugout, and hung out in the Clubhouse (locker room). It’s fun to hear them talk about [...]

Teachers make the worst students. Want to see a bunch of teachers behaving badly? Pop in on a district workshop day and you’ll catch us all doing what we tell out students not to do: talking, not working – or doing other work, chewing gum, eating during class, reading magazines… It’s like Ferris Bueller’s day off. [...]

I did nothing for school this weekend, and it felt great. (Unless you count the hour I spent making favors for a bridal shower, which I’m not.) Combine that with being sick on our day off for Yom Kippur, and I didn’t even make it to 30 hours. That’s okay, I know I’ll make it [...]
